December 9 2016 - Hot Top Ten

TRACK OF THE WEEK
NEIGHBOURHOOD VOID - CHEMICAL IMBALANCE
Raw lyrics, raw video, and an uncompromising smack in the face to anyone under the delusion that Australia is all sun and sandy beaches. Sydney lo-fi punk duo, Mikey and Gio Alexander (who shot the video) take us into a world shaped by addiction: “crystal methamphetamine/you tore apart what was left of me.”

FAT HEAVEN - CONTROL THE STATE
The Brooklyn punks' new politically charged single, taken from their debut LP 'Tough Luck' released at the end of last month on Mirror Universe Tapes. Electric guitars scream with frustration at the futility of 2016's political climate controlled by the powers that be, and “there’s nothing we can do about it.”

CHAI KHAT - HAIL SATIN
The Berlin-based trio may have a moniker mix-up somewhere between a beverage and a banned C class drug, but their sound is as smooth as the title of this debut single. Produced by Joe Joaquin and entirely recorded in analogue, its synth and electronic upbeat drums open before the guitar riff comes in and gels it together perfectly.
Refreshing, yet stimulating.

GOLDEN COAST - MAKE YA MOVE
From the rising LA duo's - Steven Mudd and Denny White - self-titled EP out today. Following singles 'Recess' and 'Comeback Kid', the pair kick some shapes, mixing electronic and organic instruments, tight production with hooky melodies, synths, reverbed guitars and a cheeky little vocal to boot.

WILD PINK - GREAT APES
Lead single from the Brooklyn indie rocker's self-titled debut album out February 10 2017 via Tiny Engines.
After their '4 Songs' EP earlier in 2016, this is less a banger than a dreampop refrain: “Riding out some psychotropics in the shadow of the World Trade/ Trying hard to understand the culture in my face/back in the shoes of the ghost I was/running fast through the jungle home/like Tim Robbins in Jacob's Ladder.”

KRISTIN KONTROL - BABY ARE YOU IN?
Released this week via Sub Pop, Kristin Welchez - Dum Dum Girls' Dee Dee - turns synthpop queen on this 80s inflected electro-dance single after previously putting out new wave album, 'X-Communicate'.

MOON DUO - CREEPIN'
Portland-based indie psych rockin' duo - Ripley Johnson (Wooden Shjips) and Sanae Yamada - give an idea of forthcoming album, 'Occult Architecture' out February 3 2017 through Sacred Bones. A sonic assault of energy, soaring vocals and guitars.

TEAM PICTURE - POTPOURRI HEADACHE
Following debut single 'Birthday Blues', emerging Leeds five-piece finish their first full year together with this six-minute, alt-shoegaze, single released this week. Chris Mulligan co-produced, it features layered synths, pedal-effected guitars and floaty vocals that make for one aural concoction of delight. Catch live at The New Adelphi, Hull on December 15, and the following night at Leeds Wharf Chambers.

LAS KELLIES - SUGAR BEAT
The Argentinian trio follow 'Celebrate Life' with this new single out January 27 2017 on Fire Records. Taken from their 'Friends and Lovers' album, it combines infectious dancefloir beats with punk-pop reverbed guitars in a garage/psych/pop blend. Catch live at The Victoria, London on December 16 (free entry) and on 17th at New River Studios, London for a Macmillan Fundraiser with Happyness, Chorusgirl + others.

LULLABY - A LIE
New North London alt-rock quartet make a bold start with their debut single of grungey melodics, off-kilter guitars and energetic hooks. “The riff of this track was born from playing a completely out of tune guitar, which is why it’s so angular, random and frantic sounding," enlightens vocalist and guitarist Lewis Knaggs." We like.
