** PREMIERE ** Weekend Wars - Swim

Words: Linn Branson

Merseysiders Weekend Wars release their fourth single 'Swim' today (February 24), which Little Indie got our ears on first to bring you its premiere here.

Recorded by the indie five-piece at Liverpool’s Motor Museum Studio with producer Al Groves (Bring Me The Horizon, Paris Youth Foundation), 'Swim' is a fresh, upfront indie anthem from the five university friends from St Helens.

"'Swim' is our first attempt at something a bit closer to a more British indie rock sound," guitarist Matt Morgan tells us. "Everything prior to 'Swim' was a lot more groove-based, so we just had a go at writing something a bit more straight and heavier, with a chorus you could bounce to."

And bounce you certainly can. Right from the off, 'Swim' floats on upbeat guitars and an infectious beat that is hard to well, beat.

Since the band's first single 'She' first began to garner them attention early last year, they have gone on to impress Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music and Virgin Radio's Jon Jackson, as well as BBC Introducing Merseyside's Dave Monks, and compared to the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Kooks, and Two Door Cinema Club (we would say, a touch of Viola Beach too). But while Weekend Wars may share a loose similarity, they are very much set on carving out their own niche.

Adds Matt: "We haven't decided to change our sound completely or anything, it's just trying different things in each single we are putting out, and seeing what people like. 'Swim' is the first song too that we've put a proper vocal middle 8 in, so this one is more in a classic song structure than the others. It started out as test from our old manager, who loves all our previous stuff but was dying to hear a track with a middle 8 vocal melody, so we just gave it a go and showed him we could!"

We think Mr. Manager will be impressed.
