Track Of The Day :: Model Life - Sugar
Words: Linn Branson
Something of a reprise for this debut offering by newly formed Scunthorpe outfit, Model Life. First featured on our Roundtable last month, 'Sugar' - produced by MJ from Hookworms - whilst our panel held back on their comments, I personally love this track.
"We made some rough demos a while ago and MJ heard the tracks and liked what we were doing, so we had a few meetings and then went over to Leeds to record with him at Suburban Home," vocalist Alex tells us. "We were the first band in the studio after it was destroyed by a flood the previous Christmas. We had an incredible time making the EP - Matt is a very talented producer."
As I always say, when a 'new' band sounds just a little too good to be complete novices, despite Model Life just breaking out in January, they were formerly known under another name - which they're unlikely to keep under wraps for too long.
"I imagine you're right," reflects Alex. "I don't expect to be able to keep it a secret for too long - just long enough for people to treat Model Life as a completely new band will be enough for me!"
"'Sugar' has that darkly contagious post-punk edge, infused with 80s pop sensibilities. The opening is rich, before weighing in with deep baselines and Alex's vocals add that impact that keeps you hooked - particularly for the 30 seconds from two minutes in where the song breaks down to just solo vocal repeating, "my sugar's gonna kill me."
Model Life are: Alex - vocals, guitar; Paul - synths, vocals; Josh - bass; Joel - lead guitar; James - drums, vocals.
