Little Indie's 10 hot picks that have been on the player over the last weeks. Try one, or try all!
ICE POPS - THE GREEN OF HER EYES
Following the May released 'Project 3' single, this new cut comes from the 'Insomniac' full-length which dropped July 20. The Sydney-based alt-rock solo venture of Guillermo CaƩtano, 'The Green Of Her Eyes' is a refreshing, slow-build alt-electronic pistachio flavoured flowing track that melts in the ears.
NEW BEAT FUND - SURF STYLE
Building a buzz in LA, this alt-indie trio - Jeffery Laliberte, Paul Laliberte and Shelby Archer - lead up to the release of their five-track ‘Chillanthropy Pt.1’ EP, which came out on July 20, with this taster cut. A swirling blend of hip-hop infused alt-rock with repeated riffs and melodic beats.
CASSIA - GET UP TIGHT
New out on Distiller last Friday (July 20), the Macclesfield three-piece again highlight their trademark jangly, calypso-flavoured rock style, with this summer dance groover. “We want to give people something different, something they haven’t heard before," say the band. "We’re crazy excited about ‘Get Up Tight’ as it signposts the beginning of a whole new element of our music. We’ve found our feet with the direction we want to take, exploring ideas we’ve never heard before in music.”
ANNA SHOEMAKER - WHAT AM I DOING TO ME?
Produced by Grammy-nominated JT Daly, this is the debut single from the 23-year-old New York-via-Philadelphia alt-pop singer/songwriter, and in advance of her inaugural EP due this autumn. Her addictive voice sweetly ranges from the soaring to the seductive over the crafted production of this anthemic, yet intimate, track. Whatever she's doing, we like it.
MORNING HARVEY - ARE YOU READY TO GO
The Brisbane based indie rock band are back with this new single, coming ahead of their debut album, set to drop this September. Driving beat and persistent hooky guitars are kept buoyant behind singer Spencer White‘s vocals. The song, he says, is "a pretty literal recount on a fairly reckless yet wonderful few months of my life. A kind of recap on a time where I was trying to fill a void with partying till the wee hours of the morning and then seeking out further enjoyment that would aid my so called “high” in continuing on for as long as I could, with whoever was willing. God knows what that void was but I felt like it was definitely the right way to approach things. Not much has changed. I still enjoy seeing the sun come up. I think the ‘are you ready to go’ part comes from the third person aspect. Probably those closest to me asking that particular question.”
L I P S - Walls
The Falmouth, Cornwall four-piece offer a woozy dreamgaze-cum-lo-fi-garage sound on this follow-up to their May single, 'Apartment', and 'Never Makes Sense' EP from January. Rachel Anstis delivers the soaring kick-ass airy vocals over layered fuzzy guitars and nice bassline. Catch live at London's Signal Pub on July 26.
THE HIP ABDUCTION - CAN YOU FEEL IT
Florida-based indie pop/trop rock collective The Hip Abduction's (THA)'s latest single is a big, crashing emotive pop- rock piece just made for big festival stages. Vocalist David New describes their new single as "about dealing with self-doubt during those critical moments that ultimately define who we become. Should you follow your heart or will you be guided by the voices in your head, discouraged by others opinions, social norms, and the fear of the unknown? Ultimately, it’s you who has to forever live with your endeavors and decisions, so we should make damn sure it comes from the gut."
TEP NO - WHO WE ARE
The solo project of Toronto-based Canadian singer, songwriter and producer who brings his blissed-out R&B style to this new electronic cut released last week. The dreamy, layered touches join with a lo-fi vocal. "The song is about a lifelong bond between friends and lovers, sharing moments while getting high, reflecting on the past and realizing that you're in a better place because you have the support of the people in your life,” he says.
CHRYSALISM - ELON MUSK
London newcomers kick some lo-fi dreamwave into gear on this new three-minute-plus track. Understated to a certain extent, Michal Vojtech's vocal is one that for once is not the dominant force (though we would like to hear more of it!), but works in equal partnership with Akira Trees' bass, Axel Oksby's chiming guitar, and David Zbirka's drums.
LUNA WAVES - SOULED OUT
Featured here last month with 'Mystery Loves Co.', Bedford-based singer-songwriter Rob Muir builds up to his debut album, 'Seafoam Dream (Part 1)', out on July 27, with another dark and atmospheric track, of dark and dreamy guitars and shimmering synths.
