With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
CROCODYLUS - MY BABY
Following second EP 'Christian Syrups' released late last year, and last single ‘My Love’ from this past March, Sydney garage rock three-piece - alternating lead singers Stephen Sacco and Josh Williams, with drummer Mikel Salvador - take down their usual blistering pace on this slow jam single, released on August 24. The sparse number filters an hypnotic, ponderous beat against their signature 60s flavour, with added key change and harmonica, plus the vocal is addictive. "We've been sitting on this song for a while, but canned it for a bit until people kept asking for it," says Salvador.
THE GOOCH PALMS - MARFA LIGHTS
From Newcastle, New South Wales, the garage pop two-piece, Kat Friend and Leroy Macqueen, follow their smash hit first single, 'Busy Bleeding', with this equally hot new release, the second single off their forthcoming third album. The catchy lyrics to the song were inspired by Marfa in the US: a small desert art hub in the middle of Texas, known for its mysterious lights, and was written by Friend after witnessing bright orbs of light darting back and forth in front of a mountain range above the desert scrub. Spooky.
SLOW - BURNING DUST
Lucy Beeler (Lttle Phnx, Feng) and Fraser Austin (Secrets, Feelings) are the Wellington, NZ sad-synthpop - "heartbroken optimists" - duo. This is just a demo, but with an accompanying time-lagged visual - created by Austin - it makes for a dreamy, fuzzed-out four minutes of shoegazey guitars and barely there, lo-fi vocals.
CAMIKAZE - RUSH
The 22-year-old Melbourne-based electronic producer returned recently with this new woozy, melancholic anthem, following last year's breakthrough debut EP 'Thousands', which has racked up online streams into the millions. This the first work on which he features vocally - hopefully not the last, going by its quality - and his mellow tone with the occasional synth marks adding a texture to the mix, makes for one euphoric listen.
STRAIGHT ARROWS - 21ST CENTURY
Released August 31, the lead single from the Sydney indie rock quartet's incoming album, 'On Top!', out October 26 via Rice is Nice Records. It's under two and a half minutes in length, but every second is utilised to the max with reverb-filled, 60s-esque fuzzy psych-punk groove, with catchy bassline, and lyrics like “I haven’t been this high since high school."
ULTRA MATERIAL - TRANSFER
Latest cut from the Brisbane dreamgaze four-piece's new album, 'Cosmic Anti Stuff', released Aug 29 via Black Wire Records. Lush, fuzzed-out layers of distortion meld with bassist Sarah Deasy's evocative vocal to create a psychedelic patchwork of moody intrigue.
