Sing & Tell :: Corella

After picking up support from the likes of the BBC and Live Nation - who have added them as a headline act for their Spotlight Series at London’s Camden Assembly next January - Manchester-based indie pop quartet Corella release their latest single ‘Island’ today (November 9).

Who are you?

My name’s Joel Smith and I'm vocalist and guitarist with Corella. Then there's Ben Henderson (vocals/bass), Jack Taylor (guitar) and James Fawcett (drums).

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.

We all moved to university in Manchester in 2015 and coincidentally moved into the same flat! We quickly realised we had very similar interests in music and the romance blossomed from there. Since then we’ve done two UK headline tours and released a bunch of singles!

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

Being the same age, we all went through that indie stage around 10 years ago when that scene was bursting through; bands like The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club and Foals were all favourites of ours and you could say they influenced us massively as we grew up and continue to do so now.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

We don’t tend to have a set ‘formula’ when it comes to writing music, there is no right or wrong way of doing it, and we find it changes with every song. The songs usually come from all four of us jamming together and when something sticks we’ll start working on it! As an example, 'Barcelona Girl' was moulded from the chorus and we worked out the rest of the track around the hook. On the other hand, 'Fever' was written in around 10 minutes!

Tell us a little about your new single.

'Island' is a new and exciting step in a direction we’ve never really taken before, using synths and percussive elements. We think sonically it is the most creative song we’ve written and has opened doors for us in our writing process.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We have our first headline show of 2019 in London at Camden Assembly on 22nd January. We are going to be announcing some special shows across the country and throughout the summer so watch this space!

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

Now most of this year's gigs have come to an end, we’ve got time to really focus on our writing and we’re looking forward to pushing our sound even further.

Where can we hear more of your music?

You can hear more of our tunes at live shows as we have exclusive material unrecorded, or you can head over to Spotify and iTunes for our entire backlog of singles.

What social media platforms can we find you on?

We’re on all the main platforms.
