Young Braves are an alt-indie-pop four-piece hailing from the West Midlands. After support slots with bands like The Amazons and The Sherlocks, they follow previous single 'Sleep It Off' with the just released '1984'. The band's strongest statement to date, it is a dystopian blast of anthemic alternative indie-pop, layering swooping guitar riffs, driving percussion and soaring keys.
Who are you?
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
Jacob, Elliot and I have been playing music together since we were between the ages of 11 to 13 after meeting at an open mic night in Shropshire. We’ve seen each other pretty much every week since then and are practically family. It’s always been a main priority for all of us and a huge part of our life from a young age so we’ve always given it a hundred percent. I guess that’s the reason we’ve come to be where we are now. There’s still a long way to go for us, but we’re not gonna be giving it up any time soon.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
We describe ourselves as “alternative indie-pop” because those three genres are we get a lot of the inspiration for our songs from. Bands like Foals, Radiohead, Pixies and Kings of Leon have always had a big influence on our music. We’ve always been predominately guitar based, but started experimenting with synth sounds and Jacob is a wizard with effects pedals so we’ve been trying to incorporate more of that into our newer stuff.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
There’s a few different ways we tend to write songs. Sometimes we’ll be messing around in practice and come up with something accidentally that hits us, I know a lot of Jacob’s ideas start from playing on his acoustic. A lot of my ideas start from just hearing it in my head and then recording it. Once we have an idea we’ll either take it to the rest of the band and finish it together, or finish it ourselves and then take it to others and see if they have anything to add. We record our tracks at Magic Garden Studio with Gavin Monaghan, who’s been such a great help and friend to us over our years together as a band.
Tell us a little about your new single.
'1984' is a slightly new direction for us, we added in a lot more synthesiser and I used my voice more to create ‘parts’ instead of just singing words if that makes sense? We definitely think it’s our strongest statement to date and have so much more exciting music that we’re eager to get out there.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
Yeah! We’ve got a headline show at The Flapper on the 24th of August in Birmingham, which should be a good one. We’ve also got a few things in pipeline for later in the year which we’ll be announcing very soon.
How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?
We’ve done a cover of a pop song in our own style that we’ll be putting on our social media in August, and we’ve got another track being released in the same month. We’re gonna be back in the studio soon as well to get these new ones down. Then it’s just about trying to get playing as many gigs in as many new places as we can.
