South London rapper Dave wins 2019 Mercury Prize
Words: Ali Mack
In an evening overshadowed by controversy, South London rapper Dave took the 2019 Mercury Prize for his March released debut album 'Psychodrama'.
The record, which entered the UK charts at number one and has sold 129,354, copies to date, beat albums by The 1975, slowthai, Foals, Fontaines D.C., Little Simz, IDLES and others.
Dedicating the award to his family and friends, especially brother, Christopher, who is serving a life sentence for murder, Dave - whose full name is David Orobosa Omoregie - told the audience "I did not expect this."
Mercury Prize judge Annie Mac said the album "showed remarkable levels of musicianship" as well as "true artistry, courage and honesty".
But the talk of the night was more about fellow nominee, Northampton rapper slowthai's performance, during which he held up a dummy severed head of Boris Johnson while performing 'Doorman', shouting "fuck Boris Johnson". Also in the action, IDLES leapt into the crowd, and one of the members of Black Midi ran headfirst into a piano, before attempting, and failing, to perform a somersault.
