Something Leather

The Hope & Ruin, Brighton

November 4 2019

Words/Pictures: Steve Willcox

Taking influence from the likes of The Kills, Wolf Alice and The Pixies, Something Leather sound like a hot prospect for a wet autumnal evening in Brighton. Playing a hometown show, the psych-rock trio have just released new single 'Lullaby', so along with other punters, we prepare to be swooned.

As they take to the stage, they head off with little known song ‘Trip to the Sun’, introduced with some catchy cowbell beats and the haunting synths of vocalist Phillie Etta Jane as she interplay’s alongside its soaring guitar riff.

‘Velvet’ lends its fairground invoking organ-keys to augment the crashing cymbals of drummer Mike (Goose) Nussbaum, and brings the first wave of movement amidst the still warming up crowd. New single ‘Lullaby’ is just as disturbing played live as it is on record. Its eerie opening perfect for the post-Halloween blues, as the organs goes full tilt against the blistering guitars of Greg Pass and thumping drums, creating a palette of gothic undertones.

An early release of two years ago, ‘Shotgun Persona’ showcases Phillie’s delicately strong vocals which is similar in style to Wolf Alice’s Ellie Roswell. As she plays, toying with the room, the crowd are digging the beats and dancing along to Greg’s deep bass-sounding guitar melody. ‘Disappear on Me’ goes full-on rock mode with scorching guitars and trippy organs and lots of stop/start moments and spoken word vocals, which brings the set to an end with applause ringing out from an appreciative crowd.

This may have been just a support slot tonight, but I really enjoyed their set with it’s laid-back groove and psychedelic organs. Something Leather have shown they have something with great appeal.
