Track Of The Day :: Sea Legs - Favourite Doll

We loved the dark pop of their 'Flowers' back in the summer, now Leeds alt-rock three-piece Sea Legs bring us an early Christmas present with 'Favourite Doll'.

Released last week via Come Play With Me, it comes as a split single (with DENSE's 'Fever Dream'), selected for the release by Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1), Adele Slater (CODA Agency), Paul Riddlesworth (Dipped in Gold Recordings, Too Pure Singles Club) and Yasmin Lajoie (Empire Management, A&R at Warner Chappell) at a panel as part of Live At Leeds Unconference event.

The track opens on an intricate riff before moving into a breezy stroll, with Tom Saunders hazy vocals driving the song forward. As well as being bright and bold, it also displays a melancholic air in its emotive and thought-provoking lyrics.

“'Favourite Doll' is about ensuring that you stay true to yourself and don’t get too wrapped up in what other people are doing, their progress or what they think of you," explains vocalist and guitarist Tom.

"It’s so easy to feel overcrowded and feel under pressure to socialise and constantly update the world with what you’re up to, and it’s draining. There is an unspoken pressure to fit into the box that people automatically assign to you based on very little knowledge and the lyrics are about being determined to resist that and reclaim your identity.”

Tom continues: ”You can be seen as almost inhuman by others sometimes; people will come to when they need you and assume that everything can just bounce off you with no repercussions because you’re just this thing that’s always there. If you let yourself be that person, people will take advantage of that and it can be damaging.”
