The Assist respond to coronavirus crisis, releasing charity single 'Life' in support of the NHS

Words: Richard Cobb

In such overwhelming, harrowing and uncertain times for us all - particularly those in the arts - it is heartwarming to see a band taking such a selfless approach and reaching out to do their bit to help others.

Walsall’s The Assist have done just that with their thought-provoking new single ‘Life’, out tomorrow (April 10). By pledging all funds raised from sales of the song to the NHS, alongside gathering donations through their Just Giving page, they are hoping for support to give something back to the tireless dedication of the medical professionals during this present coronavirus crisis.

“Nurses continue to risk their lives for the sake of others. I felt that as an artist I could encourage unity and influence people to try and make a difference," says frontman Mikey of the band’s motivation for the track. "Uncertainty loomed and suddenly we all had a purpose.”

‘Life’ itself bends sounds from the band's influences from Blossoms and The Happy Mondays, back round to their own signature style which they’ve been crafting since their inception back in 2014. At five and a half minutes, it’s a sonic voyage through all the motions from the at times sombre, to the uplifting and positive. It is a journey which echoes thoughts we’ve all no doubt had at one point or another in the past month or so. Ultimately though, the message is one of underlying positivity to make the most out of everyday situations and in that sense the timing of the track couldn’t be better.

“I’d like for this song to resemble a period in history that will be remembered for the contributions of everyone when it mattered most,” Mikey adds. Having already smashed through the £700 barrier ahead of release, it’s a tremendous feat for the five-piece and something all connected to the band can and should be extremely proud of. Both track and kind deed will live long in the memory.
