Introducing :: Captivves
On first hearing these two debut online tracks from new Reading band Captivves, it felt like listening to drills driving against a stone wall. The opening to 'Dive In', particularly, felt initially grating on the ears and nerves. However, a quick listen to 'Don't Defy Us' - and then quite a few more hearings - made us soon decide that we really were rather enjoying these 'drillers'.
The post punk three-piece (whose influences include The Wytches, Slowdive and The Garden) are releasing both tracks as a double A-side single, and when they describe their sound as "winding reverb and thunderous bass lines to coincide with rhythmic percussion", they are not wrong. While 'Don't Defy Us' may be the stronger of the two sides, the lyrics of both - "words of lust, hunger and disorder" - are astringent in their delivery by vocalist Daniel Haylock.
Captivves are: Daniel Haylock (vocals / bass), Phil Howell (guitar), Kieran Phillips (drums).
