Listen :: Southern - Cool Kid

Words: Pollyanna Sheehan

Having just completed dates with Catfish and the Bottlemen, Southern, Belfast-born (and hitherto Liverpool-based but are now upping sticks with a move south to London) brother and sister Thom and Lucy, are about to release their latest single 'Cool Kid'.

The previous EPs from the duo include notable tracks such as ‘Where The Wild Are’ and ‘Shout It’, which demonstrate their ability to infuse bluesy guitar riffs with folk/country inspired choruses to produce the iconic sound that has become so popular. Their varied range of influences from The Dead Weather, Lou Reed to Radiohead, have undoubtedly subtly seeped through their creative pores.

‘Cool Kid’, out on November 24, allows for Southern to show their versatility as a band to produce a more evidently pop sound, which highlights their country and folk influences.  Although it first appeared on their self-titled EP of last year, thid is a slightly reworked version, yet the unmistakeable trace of blues is still apparent through the subtle electric guitar that features on this track, and the startling harmonies provided by Lucy. When combined, this proves to be a beautiful combination that produces another incredible single from them both.

Currently finishing recording their debut album (expected in spring 2015), they have recently announced they will be supporting Hudson Taylor on their UK tour, including a show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on February 12 2015. Prior to that you can catch them on November 21 at The Whiskey Sessions Festival, Manchester.
