Not a girl amongst them, despite the name. None of the four 'Isabelles' are actually known by that epithet either, and neither is the titular 'She' of the fuzzy and furious, and extremely infectious, 'She's In Pictures' an Isabelle. Johnny, Joel, Morgan and Josh are the four members of new Falmouth band The Isabelles.
But if they seem at all familiar it's probably because they each have been part of Hazards, Pastel Colours, Lost Dawn and Goldtone - all part of the burgeoning Cornish indie music scene. Coming together late last year as garage rockin' The Isabelles - although touting themselves then as Not Hot Band - they sound like a mash-up between The Voyeurs and CuT, with a fast-driven energy and plenty of squally guitars.
Recorded and mixed in two days, 'She's In Pictures' quickly began to pick up attention, however, as the band explain, when it came to choosing a name, "we decided that 'the Not Hot Band' was possibly the shittest band name ever to have existed, and spent a good two hours in Morg's kitchen throwing out random words with 'the' on the front of them. After going through the atlas looking for peculiar country or town names, we got on to names for girls and Isabelle was literally the first one we saw. An hour later the Facebook page was up and the song was released under The Isabelles. I wish there was better story behind it, like the girl who got away kinda shit, but nah. Straight out of the book of baby names!"
'She's In Pictures' is one of four tracks on their recent debut EP, 'Yours & Mine', self-released via Bandcamp. All convey edgy rhythms with a sense of psych-punk. Well worth taking a listen to. And if The Isabelles know what's good for them, they'll see about a single release for 'She's In Pictures', otherwise it may be destined to become known as 'the one that got away'.
The Isabelles are: Joshua Gibbs - vocals/guitar, Johnny Griffiths - bass, Morgan Mathews - drums, Joel McConkey - guitar.
