Introducing :: Cellars
Words: Alison Mack
Formed in late 2014 by brothers Gabriel and Dan Levy, Cellars are a five-piece alt pop band from North London.
Having grown up playing music together (they are all 19/20), they "decided to give our bedroom jams a name", and set upon calling themselves Cellars, playing gigs around town, including sold-out shows at the Barfly and Borderline, and now have just uploaded their first demo.
'Night Until Noon', the band tell us, came about "when Gabriel started messing around with some chords that he liked, jammed the track through and quickly put down a rough demo of it. He then laid down some loose bass and drum takes, and left space for the rest of us to bring in what we thought would add to the track. The melody Dan then started to play with gave it more of a ballad feel than we originally had in mind, but once we'd fully demo-ed the song we realised that was exactly the direction it should move in."
It's a tuneful little number, with a particularly nice guitar intro - "the guitar sound was something Gabriel stumbled upon when experimenting with his pedals - and it stuck!" - that saunters at a casual, mellow pace. It will be interesting to see where Cellars go next, as judging by this one demo they could veer into dreampop or go right off the scale into a full rock out.
The band play the Old Queens Head, Islington on May 21, followed by a headline show at The Garage, London on June 13. They are also confirmed at Blackheath festival in September, with more dates to be confirmed. Keep check on their Facebook page.
Cellars are: Dan Luke - vocals, Gabriel Levy - guitar, Dan Levy - drums, Tom Harris - bass, Simon Flynn - keys.
