Loom Back In Bleedin Business - On Record And Live Residency
Back in the dark winter of 2012, the first recorded effort any of us heard from the even darker, post-punk Leamington-based (then four-piece) Loom was a cassette-only release on the Heart Throb label - which sold out within hours of its December release - and which duly made our Hot Top Ten at the time.
Fast forward to 2015, and along with time moving on, so too has the Loom machine started rolling out again. Firstly, 'Bleed On Me' sees it gaining a revamped re-release, cutting its length from 3:19 down to 2:55, changing a few elements, and generally sounding tighter and brighter in a Duncan Mills (who also helmed 'I Get A Taste') production. It is set to drop on 7" vinyl as a two-track, 500 limited edition EP along with 'Hate'.
The single - out on May 27 - will be the second release on Raft Records (following the 7' double pack which featured new tracks by Niqab, Puffer, Jet Black and Skinny Girl Diet), the label set up by Loom's frontman Tarik Badwan and his brother Faris Badwan (The Horrors/Cat’s Eyes), a subsidiary of The Vinyl Factory.
Over the last two years the band have undergone various changes here and there, though without diversifying too strongly from the original intention. Live they filled out the sound with an additional member on bass - two having held the position prior to late last year - and overall, we have seen a slow, but tangible maturity and progression in their sound and style.
Rolling on to the present, Loom has made two more significant changes to their line-up. Tarik Badwan (vocals), Matt Marsh (rhythm guitar), Josh Fitzgerald (lead guitar) remain, but now in comes Sam Lister on drums (to replace Neil Byrne), and a third (of four brothers) Badwan - Harry - moves in as the latest to hold the bass position.
With all that going on, it may be well worth checking out the new look Loom when they embark on a monthly residency at The Black Heart in Camden. Dates are: April 15th, 22nd, 29th and May 13th - and all will be special free entry shows.
In addition to the above, Loom have also confirmed two further London shows: April 18 - Record Store Day After Party at Cafe 1001; May 23 - Flufferfest at Shacklewell Arms.
