Track Of The Day :: Yak - Smile
They started off the year forcefully enough with the majesty of debut single 'Hungry Heart' - as we said here our first "wow!" track of 2015 - now the London three Yak continue on the upward curve with 'Smile'.
Taken from their first EP - the three-track 'Plastic People' out on May 25 - 'Smile' manages to be both sensuous by way of Oli Burslem's deep and richly evocative vocal, and something to be slightly wary of as each note is enough to strike a shiver of fear down the spine.
“You know I never said that romance was dead now,” Burslem vocalises, before urging those, “Black eyes, come on baby make them smile/I’ve seen them before but I ain’t seen them for a while,” all the while emitting an intensity that threatens to engulf everything amidst torrid guitar lines that sear through its four minutes, before exploding in a cataclysmic finale. Phew.
Yak support Superfood tonight (April 8) at Birmingham Rainbow and tomorrow at London Heaven. The band then embark on a headline tour later this month, with further dates throughout the summer before supporting Peace in September.
