Track Of The Day :: The Island Club - Paper Kiss

Words: Linn Branson

We introduced the Brighton quintet The Island Club here last summer with their inaugural track 'Ecstasy'.

Since that time they have been busy seemingly working on a number of changes - including the line-up. While Michael Askew still lends his impressive vocals at the front and on rhythm guitar, and Julien Forsythe-Lewis (lead guitar) and Sam Cantlon (drums) were also in the previous four-man incarnation, in come David Blowers to take over bass duties, and Barney Cox on synthesiser to increase sound power and swell out to a five-piece.

They are also now about to launch their 'official' debut single on November 20. With an impressive team behind them (Neil Kennedy on production, mixed by Geoff Swan - Coldplay, Haim, Ed Sheeran -  and Robin Schmidt - Two Door Cinema Club, Ben Howard, Black Keys - was recruited to master the track), you would expect 'Paper Kiss' to be a little bit good - and that it is.

It's one of those synthy, poppy numbers that you are bound to fall in love with on first hearing - or at least have it running around in your head after - melding dance pop rhythms with Michael Askew's distinctive vocal and easy melodic guitar hooks; the synth infusion, with smooth disco licks Nile Rogers would approve of, completes the package.
