HOOPS - FEELIN FINE
Initially Drew Auscherman's solo project, the Bloomington, Indiana guitarist is not so lonely since linking with bassist Kevin Krauter, James Allen on drums, and guitarist Keagan Beresford to create a four-piece. Lo-fi vocals nestle amidst atmospheric psychgaze guitars and synths and building melodies. Hoops' debut tape came out yesterday (March 4) on Warm Ratio. Star rating: ***/5
THE CROWS FLY - AUGUST SUN
Melancholic acoustic alt-folk single from the West Yorkshire duo - Simon Moore (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) and Steven McNamara (backing vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar) -released this week. Star rating: ***/5
SKYMACHINE - LAND OF BLACK GOLD
Lead single from the debut EP (due late April) by the Christchurch-based alt-pop outfit, formed by New Zealand producer Brydon Hulse. Blending together falsetto melodies and beats. Star rating: ***.5/5
MT. WOLF - ANACRUCIS
From upcoming EP 'Hex', released through CRC Music on March 25 (to be followed by an autumn debut album). The London three-piece further hone electronic and acoustic elements in this cathartic and uplifting song that "deals with convalescence and rebirth from a dark place with the help of someone else". Catch them live on March 10 in Los Angeles at the Hotel Cafe. Star rating: ****/5
SAMARIS - WANTED 2 SAY
From the 12” vinyl and download EP out on April 8 via One Little Indian. The Icelandic trio offer haunting vocals from Jófríður Ákadóttir - their first outing singing in English - set against dub-pop notes and a minimalist electronic production. Star rating: ****.5/5
