Sydney outfit Spookyland offer, on this debut album, an intriguing mix of styles via 11 tracks that make 'Beauty Already Beautiful' a contender for one of the year's best albums. Ranging from range atmospheric rock, to 90s stoner shoegaze helmed by the yelping nasal tones of 23-year-old vocalist Marcus Gordon.
From opener 'Abuse's gentle swathe of strings and organ, through the slow-building and biting 'Prophet' where Gordon raps a political critique, to the anthemic weight of the record's standout, the reverbed explosion thstnis 'God's Eyes', Spookyland show they can deftly work harmonies and power chords together with lyrics that address issues such as gender differences (the scorching guitar filled 'Big Head'), self-destruction (the six-minute closer 'Bulimic'), and even Twitter ('Champions').
