New Sounds #70 July 2 2016

SUNJACKET - NOT ENOUGH
Dark, synth-driven pop from the Chicago four-piece, overlaid with a layered mathy element. This is the first single from their debut full-length, 'Mantra', set for release this autumn, and was co-produced by Fraser McCulloch of Milagres. Star rating: 4/5

JOLÉ - A YEAR OF AGES
Brighton-based singer-songwriter Josh Oliver has drawn comparisons to Frightened Rabbit, Keaton Henson, Bon Iver in his compositions, and this bright, upbeat track is the last of three installments from a pop rock trilogy which was released on July 1. Star rating: 3.5/5

MAN OF MOON - SIGN
The 20-year-old Edinburgh pair have just released their ‘Medicine‘ EP earlier this month from which this is a standout four minutes of hypnotic pulsing drums and Chris Bainbridge's darkly atmospheric vocaks. Catch them live at a raft of festivals over the next month, beginning with T in the Park, Perth on July 10. Star rating: 4.5/5

AFFAIRS - RUNAWAY
Taken from the recently released Ed Buller-produced 'Stained Gold' EP by the Manchester-based five-piece, who continue to release some gems single-wise, with this latest turning more shimmering piece of 80s-influenced synth gold. Catch live at London's Tooting Tram & Social on July 15 for John Kennedy's (Radio X) Xposure night. Star rating: 4.5/5

OVER SANDS - MEMORY HOUSE
It was back in early 2014 we first introduced London-based brothers Tom and Ben
Stephens who had just dropped their first track 'Tune Out'. Now the duo are building up to their second EP release - 'Roman Rooms', out on August 19 - by airing this first track. Reflecting on how memories shape the present, and also can distort the remembrance of  the past, it is a sub-five minutes of perfectly worked melodies and bewitching vocals. Star rating: 4.5/5
