New Sounds #88 August 25 2016

SUNDOWN JURY - PASSING
Ambient acoustic melodies and harmonies open this new single from the Brisbane folkster quartet, taken from their upcoming EP 'Time is Dancing', released September 16. As it picks up with bass, drum breaks and violin it becomes a cross between Mumfird & Sons and Stornoway. Star rating: ★★

OYSTER KIDS - GUM (EVERYBODY'S MY FRIEND)
The LA indie-pop duo deliver a crunchy driven bass, plentiful hooks and an infectious upbeat rhythm over laid back melodics in the style of Foster The People on this third self-produced single release, as Andrew Eapen sings, “Everybody’s my friend.” Star rating: ★★

ROOD - OBSESSED
Alt-rock Barnsley five-piece share their debut single, recorded at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool and produced by Chris Taylor. Out on August 29 on digital and vinyl, Tom Hale's heavyweight vocals are stamped over swirling layers of guitars and keys, hefty bass and solid drums. Catch live at The Polish Club, Barnsley on September 3. Star rating: ★★★★

COLOURING - ABOUT YOU
Featured here back in June with 'In Motion', the former Osca named outfit return with this new single which the London-based band describe as “our version of a dance tune. It’s about addiction and a loss of control over your feelings for someone.” A soulful groove that builds and intensifies as it works over three minutes of multi-layered vocals and throbbing beat. Star rating: ★★★★

URUGUAY - PIECES
New York City-based electronic duo - Benjamin Dawson Sivalia (production, backing vocals) and Stepha Murphy (lead vocals) - have just self-released this new darkly intense single highlighting Murphy's ethereal voice and clipped beats, their follow-up to 'Shells' and taken from their debut EP. Star rating: ★★
