Watch :: Sundara Karma are a 'Happy Family' ahead of US tour
Words: Sam Geary
With our American cousins currently going ape over our own Sundara Karma - whom we Brits have all been relishing for four years now - after their debut SXSW appearance and ahead of their upcoming US dates, the Reading four-piece share their moving visual for track 'Happy Family'.
The video complements the Americana folk-inflected stomp taken from their debut album, ‘Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect’, capturing a heartfelt story of a pre-teen boy left home alone to fend for himself while clearly missing his absent mother.
"The story was inspired by both the lyrics and experiences from when I was a kid. After speaking to [Sundara Karma frontman] Oscar, the idea reflected his own childhood too and it was great to talk it through with him," said director Stroma Cairns. "I instantly loved the track and felt like the epic progression suited a narrative that builds. The boy in the video gets more and more frustrated with his loneliness, ending with a release dancing in and clutching onto his mother's red dress, really revealing his desire and need to feel close to her." Oscar added, "I thought Stroma's treatment was charming and sweet, it brought a tear to my eye. I only wish that my mum had such dresses when I was younger."
