"Are they the 'Shrimpy' girls?" asked my assistant on hearing that we had had a new track land in our inbox from Austrian grunge-psych trio DIVES, and all decks were subsequently being cleared for this to be Track Of The Day.
Yes, these are the one and same Viennese 'Shrimpy girls', referring to their last single 'Shrimp' which so excited Little Indie on hearing back in October, resulting in our naming them as One To Watch 2018.
Viktoria Kirner, Tamara Leichtfried and Dora De Goederen first met at the Austrian Girls Rock Camp in 2016, before delivering their self-titled mini album in 2017 on Siluh Records - on which both 'Shrimp' and new single cut 'Tomorrow' appear - which led to their recently being nominated for Austria's biggest music award, "Amadeus".
Though a little less immediate than the glorious 'Shrimp', 'Tomorrow' still retains that effective L.A. Witch with Waxahatchee vocal (from Viktoria) feel, with a running drone-like guitar, compelling bassline and confident drums.
That DIVES haven't yet broken outside of Austria and Germany is a surprise; they certainly have enough appeal to make headway in the UK, and it surely can't be long before an enterprising promoter (and a good PR) gives them the opportunity.
