Scottish duo DRIFT throw out an electro 'Lifeline'

Words: Richard Cobb

When I think of Paisley, I think of the great Paolo Nutini, and a not-so-great football club who would quite happily lie down on the final day of the 1985/86 season to gift Celtic an unmerited title on what was without doubt the cruellest day in Scottish football history. Luckily though, a 34-year grudge (which partly pre-dates my existence) can be momentarily shelved and replaced with a far more positive export, two-piece electro outfit DRIFT.

Out today (July 2), 'Lifeline' is a smooth and thoughtful track which is so easy to get immersed in that the five-and-a-quarter minutes will fly by and you’ll want to hit repeat to relive the blissful experience again straight away.

The folk background of songwriter Linzi Clark blends in perfectly with producer Andrew Quinn’s subtle and soulful atmospheric tones (utilised for the first time here) to fuse together two contrasting styles to create something of a Moby and Kate Bush supergroup - with more hair and less squealing.

“I wanted to explore the secrecy and vulnerability in really letting go,"
Linzi says of the track. "That authentic moment we all get at times when you step outside of your own body and have a light bulb moment, letting go of ego and your own ideas of yourself and how you’re seen to others. It’s sensual, but with an underlying edge of vulnerability. It’s about treading the line between lust and love and not wanting to commit in fear of losing that spark. Wanting to delve into the moment without the aftermath of doubt and fear and only wanting to show a certain side of you, without anything too real. Eventually confronting that head on, being challenged to ask yourself why.”

Fellow Paisley "Buddies", the brilliant The Vegan Leather, are a good indicator of the kind of peaks the band can aspire to with their own brand of dreamy synth layers, but the early signs show that the duo are more than capable of carving out their own path of success.
