Harry Styles

Electric Ballroom, London

December 19 2019

Words: Izzy Butler

More used to selling out arena venues, Harry Styles got up close and personal when he played a secret intimate gig at London’s Electric Ballroom last night. Fans were given the chance to see their idol at the 1,500-capacity venue by ordering his album from his official website.

Celebrating the release of new album 'Fine Line', he arrives on stage dressed in a buttermilk Gucci suit, and proceeds to entertain the crowd with the full album, kicking off with opener 'Golden', and working through to the record's title track.

He is on good form, blowing kisses to the audience in between songs. “We have one job tonight - to entertain you,” he says early on, sounding like a Robbie Williams for the millennials who missed out on the thrall of that other boy band that spawned a mega star.

‘Watermelon Sugar', sounding sweet with its brass funk infusion, is followed by the pop trope 'Adore You', and the piano notes of 'Falling' add to its emotional input, while 'To Be So Lonely' and 'Canyon Moon' are both augmented by the crowd spilling out the words back at him. showing that at least 99.9 per cent of the room have bought the album.

After having dutifully fulfilled his 'entertainment' pledge in the set. the encore serves as dessert and where he parades earlier songs, ‘Sign Of The Times’ and ‘Kiwi’, and One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. There's also a cover of Lizzo’s ‘Juice' and another of Paul McCartney’s ‘Wonderful Christmastime’. Stormzy joins him on stage for ‘Vossi Bop’, where Hazza and Stormz both get in the zone, leading a chant of 'F the government and fuck Boris'.

Were we entertained? I think you can safefully say we were.
