With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
NA NOISE - WAITING FOR YOU
Auckland, NZ fuzz-pop duo Na Noise - Hariet Ellis and Yolanda Fagan - have shared a brand new single, ‘Waiting For You', the title-track of their incoming debut album, out November 20. The cinematic track follows the earlier 'Then Who' with its spaghetti western sound, call-and-response vocals, organ and percussion.
Auckland, NZ’s Stella Rose Bennett, aka BENEE, reveals new single 'Happen To Me', lifted from her debut album 'Hey u x', out November 13 on Island Records. BENEE recently cited the tune as her “favourite on the album. This song is super important to me. It’s the first song where I’ve written about anxiety. The lyrics are pretty dark. Life is pretty crazy right now, and I think it’s important to talk about this kind of stuff.”
Sydney-based dreampop duo Micra - guitarist/producer Robbie Cain and
Bulgarian-born singer/guitarist Ivana Kafedjiyska - unveiled this new single 'Coral Crush' last week via Liberation Records. Fusing layers of hazy guitar, laid-back percussion and pop-esque melodies with softly determined vocals, while lyrically it "follows a confrontation between two people and how they are influencing each other. Incompatibilities can slowly wear down a relationship over time. Once it comes time to confront it all the harder decisions are usually the healthier ones," they say. "We wanted to make something that felt more light-hearted and fun than what we have put out previously. It’s a little bit less laboured over, minimal and pop-oriented."
ESTÈRE - MAD ABOUT YOUR SEA
Wellington, NZ's Estère Dalton flaunts hypnotic R&B and neo-soul grooves on new track 'Mad About Your Sea', the follow-up to September's ‘Calculated Risk’, both coming from her third studio album 'Archetypes', due on January 22 2021 via Blue Riot Records, and recorded in collaboration with Massive Attack producer Stew Jackson. The song, says Estère, is about "being addicted to someone who is no good for you - and wanting to save that person, despite the hurt that they have caused you."
Auckland, NZ artist Alexa Casino joins up with Wellington sibling trio Womb to deliver a collaboration on glitchy new single 'Stars', with Womb's Charlotte Forrester providing the high-ranging vocal. Alexa continues to impress with each new outing, since Little Indie first heard her four years ago.
